Lynn Schmidt & Brian Olkowski share their projects at Cool Tools IV
Brian Olkowski
Title of Project - Language Arts Alive
Summary: This grant brought my language arts curriculum alive. I used a document camera to illustrate writer's craft found in books. The students were able to see actual pages of books and the small print blown up on the big screen. After seeing example of these crafts in books, they were able to give it a go and then were able to record their own stories onto an iPod creating their own audio books. They were also able to listen to audio books via the iPod increasing their reading fluency.
I cannot see teaching without this wonderful technology!
Lynn Schmidt
Title of Project - Language Arts Alive
Summary: In order to improve students’ implementation of the scientific process and microscopy skills, I used a familiar topic to investigate a practical inquiry—“What drinks are bad for our teeth.” The class designed an experiment to ascertain the answer. Students examined the teeth using the digital microscope before, during, and after the teeth being soaked in various popular drinks. Simultaneously, students captured magnified images of the teeth in various states of decay. Students used these photos and their observation noted in scientific reports, demonstrating their ability to follow the scientific process and publish their work.
The addition of the digital microscope/camera added an exciting component to the lab work. Many of the students had never viewed anything under magnification and were further inspired in their investigations. The ability to publish high quality “professional” work motivated students to do their best.
